Just – Inspiration from the Song of Songs

This piece of minimalist vocal music from David Lang has quickly become my favorite piece of music.

Besides being an amazingly enchanting piece of music, what David Lang is doing with the text is amazing. He starts at the beginning of the text of the Song of Solomon and refashions each phrase where the lovers discuss each other’s attributes. Here’s how he says it, “For my text I listed everything personal or owned that is attributed to the man and to the woman. To clarify who is speaking I started every phrase of his with “just your” and every phrase of hers with “and my.” It is interesting that in a text about a love that is shared there are only seven instances of “our.”

Definitely worth the $2 it cost in itunes.
